Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

my name is kevin mcdonald and i

completed a tesol certificate here at

ucla extension

and tesol is teaching english to

speakers of other languages

i wanted to do the tesol program here at

uc extension

because it seemed like a great way for

me to

increase my marketability on the job

market but also cater to a population of

student learners that i was really

interested and passionate about so for

the tesol certificate

there are four core courses and then

there's a

professional practicum which is where

you design your digital portfolio

having this portfolio is that once we go

on the job market we immediately have

a digital way of marketing ourselves

that is relevant and current

and also displays uh not just our

teaching philosophies but also

videos of us actually teaching in action

so that

our potential employers can see how we

interact in a classroom environment

the two courses that were the most

important to me were a course

taught on technology in the classroom

and a course taught on

inclusivity and diversity in the

classroom and to have that commitment to

both technology

and inclusivity in the classroom within

a certificate experience was not

something that i would find and i was

really really

impressed and and felt grateful that we

had that experience

the convenience of being able to take

the program the entire program from the

comfort of your

home was amazing but then also it was a

fantastic way for me to engage with a

whole

range of other learners who are coming

from different experience levels

different ages and different geographic

places all over the country

who provided a really kind of

interesting plurality of

perspectives and experiences for all of

us so for people with a tesol

certificate there are quite a few job

opportunities

there are lots of private english

language learning schools that are

always looking for instructors both

in the united states and abroad there

are opportunities for example that i'm

interested in

would be going in the community college

route and being able to teach

english language learners at community

colleges there are also

opportunities in k-12 education where

they're looking for esl instructors

and for all of those different

instructor opportunities

they're going to really look well upon a

ucla extension certificate because it

has that name ucla behind it
